FP&A Model Optimization Q&A

Hi everyone,

Thank you to those who attended last month's CEWs session on FP&A Model Optimization. Please see answers to the questions that came in through the chat below, and let me know if you'd like any follow up.

Is it good practice to use Named Set in import and currency conversion processes?

Yes, it can be a good idea to use a named set in an import and currency conversion processes. If you need to run the currency conversion process for different time periods often, then it might not be as useful as a named set as you would need to go back to model manager frequently.

Can you give Security Access to write comments to a template but not to change the numbers?

Yes, you can setup individual’s users to write comments on a template but have the cells protected so that they can’t change numbers.

Can we see Row Notes in a Dataview?

No, we cannot see Row Notes in a Dataview. It is only possible through a Template.

Can you add dashboard to a group so that you don’t have to add to them individually?

Yes, we can assign the dashboards by group by using the assign button in Dashboard Studio.

Can we accomplish the same thing using filters in FP&A+?

Yes, filters manager essentially replaces named sets with the same functionality with some additional features, but all the concepts covered by using filters in your templates and processes are the same.

Can you also show us your recommended optimization process?

We have an article that goes over processes that you can use to help optimize the performance of your environment. This involves creating a fact table and removing zeroes. Please see this attached link for an article on how to go about this: https://support.prophix.com/hc/en-us/articles/9034099120013--Creating-an-Optimize-Fact-Table-Process

Can you confirm if you select shared when setting up a named set it will be available in all linked cubes. We've been told time named sets are not updated in all cubes when changed and then saved and published

I can confirm with testing this offline that setting a named set to shared from the Time dimension for example will indeed share it across all Models who also have their Time Dimension shared.
